Apple buys Shazam, goes ad-freeSeptember 24, 2018
Apple has finalised the deal to acquire Shazam, the music recognition app. As an aftermath of this deal, Shazam will go add free for everyone.
“Apple and Shazam have a long history together. Shazam was one of the first apps available when we launched the App Store and has become a favorite app for music fans everywhere,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music, in a statement. “With a shared love of music and innovation, we are thrilled to bring our teams together to provide users even more great ways to discover, experience and enjoy music.”
Apple initially announced plans to acquire the app back in December. At that time, Shazam was valued at around $400 million. This move, Apple hopes, will help bolster its music endeavours. The music streaming market, which is the next thing, is getting crowded. By taking advantage of their (large) sums of cash, they want to get ahead of the competition. This goes on to show their commitment to the music industry.
Shazam is a music recognition app. The history of the app traces long back, having existed in the days of Nokia’s Symbian operating system. To recognize a song, a user records a clip using their microphone. The app then discovers the music from its database, including lyrics and videos. Users can also recognize adverts and clips.
The European Union approved this deal early September. They had launched an investigation (Like they always do) into the dealing amid fears that the acquisition may skew the music streaming playground towards Apple.
