Google has released Earth VR, which allows users to tour the world in the comfort of their homes. At least virtually. If you have always wanted to peak at Mount Everest’s peak but never had the energy to, this is your chance.
Google Earth is a 3D map of the globe, with images and other information. The views are generated from satellite images, as well as other sources. This allows the map to have a represantion of the entire world to some resolution. In regions of popular interest, the resolution is as high as 15cm per pixel. The vast areas of land are available from at least 15m resolutions.
Google Earth VR shows some of the interesting places in the world to virtual reality. As Google puts it, you can fly over a city, stand at the top of the highest peaks, and even soar into space. Now you can see the world as if you are on a holiday with Elon Musk.
The app is available as a free download in the Steam VR store. If you happen to have the Vive, go on, load the app and tour the world. The app comes loaded with hand-picked destinations to great spots. Just one more excuse to not actually go out and explore.
It is launching as an exclusive for the HTC Vive VR. Other platforms should expect it next year.
