EcoBank set to Launch MasterPass QR to 33 African Countries, Including Zimbabwe

By | October 22, 2016

EcoBank Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with MasterCard international to bring MasterPass QR to 33 African Countries.

This MasterPass MOU is the largest deal of its kind for MasterCard, globally. MasterPass QR was specifically chosen due to its ease of use, both to the consumer and merchant.

MasterPass QR is a mobile payments solution, akin to Apple pay and Samsung pay. But unlike them, it uses Internet connections and QR codes to access stored credit cards instead of NFC. Much like PayPal does. Just so you know, MasterPass also offers NFC payments.

EcoBank Nigeria customers are already accessing MasterPass QR. The service is expected to reach the remaining 33 countries before the end of this year. EcoBank Zimbabwe customers are also set to receive the benefits of this deal.

Users of Ecobank’s mobile banking platform across the 33 countries will be able to safely pay for online and in-store purchases by scanning a Quick Response (QR) code displayed at checkout on their smartphones, or by entering a merchant identifier into their feature phones.
