Microsoft has released Windows 10 anniversary update, bringing edge extensions mainstream. These have been available for insiders for a while now, since March this year. The anniversary update also brings a lot of other features as well.
To install the new extensions look for extensions in the hamburger menu. Follow the link ‘get extensions from store. This opens a page dedicated to extensions. Once there, select either free or update to install. You will have to turn the extension back on in the browser.
At this point, not many of these are available in the store. But those that are there, are pretty from the big names. The ever so popular AdBlock and AdBlock Plus now work with Edge. No more annoying ads, right? Microsoft’s office online is also present, saving you from installing a full offline version on memory limited devices.
The other extensions that are currently available are Amazon Assistant, OneNote Web Clipper, LastPass, Mouse Gestures, Save to Pocket, Page Analyzer, Translator for Microsoft Edge, Reddit Enhancement Suite, Pin It Button, and EverNote Web Clipper. You might not be aware of Reddit Enhancement Suite, but for those who know it, it is a deal breaker.
The addition of Extension support to the mainstream version might be the savior Edge needs to join the big league. After proving itself to be fast, and efficient, the browser still felt a bit underwhelming due to lack of extensions.
Look out for more features in the latest update, once it reaches your PC. The roll out is staggered, so you might have to wait a little.
