How to use Econet Wi-Fi

Econet Wireless recently introduce free wifi bundles, and here is how you can use them. From using a password to using the more complex SIM authentication, we have you covered.

The easiest way for you to use these bundles is to use the Econet Wifi open hotspot. This method saves you the configuration that you would otherwise meet with the method below. When you connect to the Econet Wifi free hotspot, open your browser. You will be automatically redirected to a login page. Enter your phone number in the space provided, and request a pin. Once you receive the SMS with your pin, enter it in the password field. Click login, and use your WiFi bundles.

Alternatively, you can use the Econet WiFi zone secure. You set it up once, and you automatically connect to the network each time you are in range. When using the above method, you have to login in every time. Read more below for the instructions on how to go about it for iOS and Android devices.

Econet Wi-Fi Zone Secure on iOS

To use Econet WiFi zone secure on iOS, you need to install a helper. Follow the instructions below to use the service on Apple devices.

  1. Click http://www.econet.co.zw/apple/econet_secure2.mobileconfig to install
  2. Restart your phone
  3. Turn on your Wi-Fi
  4. Select Econet Wi-Fi Zone Secure and you are good to go

To connect on Android no installation is necessary. You can follow the screenshots below to configure your connection. Please note you need to have your Econet SIM card installed to access the WiFi.

Alternatively, you can install the WiFi zone application from Google play to avoid manual configurations. You will also be able to use a map of available WiFi hotspots in your vicinity from the application. This is actually the best option for Android users, and you do not have to tinker around with settings. Just like with the other method, you need to have your Econet SIM card in the phone.

Connecting to these hotspots is called mobile offload. You get to access faster internet on your device. At the same time, this frees up resources for other users. In the end, the whole network is de-conjested. This does not come without its own disadvantages though. When you connect to a WiFi network, the phone gets into a data-hungry mode. You will thus get to use more data. Keep an eye on the usage, to avoid loss of your airtime.
